So, I was scrolling through the internet the other day, you know, the usual doomscrolling, and I stumbled upon this image. And I thought, "Wow, this is the perfect metaphor for my life."
See this guy here? He's in a canoe, right on the edge of a waterfall. And his buddy? He's just hanging there, like, "Having fun yet?"
This is me and my financial advisor. I'm the guy in the canoe, blissfully unaware of the impending doom. And my financial advisor? He's up in the tree, telling me all the great things we could have done, while I'm about to go over a financial Niagara Falls.
I mean, who goes kayaking towards a waterfall with their friend just chilling in a tree? That's like me going on a date with a guy who says, "So, I love adventure. My ideal date is skydiving into a volcano." And I'm like, "Great! So, reservations at 7?"
And the worst part is, the guy in the tree probably told him. He's like, "Hey, man, maybe let's not paddle towards that giant chasm of death?" And the guy in the canoe is like, "Nah, I'm feeling adventurous! Besides, I saw a coupon for a 'free splash' at the bottom!"
It reminds me of when I decided to start my own business. I had this brilliant idea, and I was so excited. I told my friend, who's a lawyer, all about it. He looked at me, then looked at the business plan, then looked back at me and said, "So, you're going to jump off a cliff and hope for the best?" And I was like, "Exactly! But with a really good business card!"
He's probably up in the tree right now, shaking his head, muttering, "I told him. I told him."
And you know what the scariest part is? The guy in the canoe looks so happy. So, so happy. He's probably thinking, "This is the best vacation ever! Such a rush!" Meanwhile, he's about to experience a rush of adrenaline he never thought possible, followed by a very abrupt, very wet, and very final landing.
It's like when you're in a relationship, and everything's going great, and you're just cruising along, and then BAM! Your partner reveals they collect antique porcelain dolls and plan to fill your entire house with them. And you're just there, paddling along, thinking, "This is nice. Peaceful. I wonder what's for dinner?"
So, yeah. This image. It's a reminder. A reminder to always, always check for waterfalls before you start paddling. And maybe, just maybe, listen to your friends who are smart enough to stay in the tree. Thank you, you've been a great audience!
